Dropping expectations doesn't mean ignoring your needs!

on Thu 5 Sep

I went into our family holiday with the intention of being more present, getting off restaurant review sites and going with the flow. I can honestly say I learnt a lot about what helps and hinders this.

Two things that stand out:

1) Letting go of expectations around what should happen, going with the flow and enjoying the moment does not mean ignoring my needs or wants. In fact, trying to go with the flow when I'm not honouring (or communicating) my needs tends to result in the complete opposite.

2) Going with the flow often means compromise.  Compromising is a collaborative process, it requires good communication between all parties.  Knowing everyone's needs and wants, communicating and collaborating ahead of time, can make going with the flow a lot easier.
